No one wants to experience any type of water damage, but if you discover a burst pipe in your home, it can be exceptionally difficult to deal with. Pipes can discharge extreme volumes of water, leading to a significant amount of damage in a short amount of time.

Water damage is a difficult thing to plan for as it seems quite hypothetical, but it happens quite frequently and having a plan is key. There are about one out of every 50 homes that have damages annually, but those who have a plan tend to have a much better time recovering.

Are You Ready in the Event of a Burst Pipe?

Shut off your water main. If there is a pipe that burst in your home that is not attended to, it can continue to gush water indefinitely. Making sure to find and turn off your water main in the house can prevent water from continuing to saturate the area.

Shut off your electricity. Keeping water far away from electricity is key, so if it is safe to do so, turn off your home’s power from your breaker box to prevent the soaked area from becoming a shock or fire hazard.

Contact your restoration company. One of the things you can do to plan for water damage in advance is decide which restoration company you will be working with. This way, you can call them immediately when you discover water damage to have the restoration started right away.

Take a record of the damages. For those who are eligible to file an insurance claim, keeping good records is key. Taking photos and videos is a great way to document the damages for your records.

Contact your insurance company. Every type of insurance coverage will vary, so it is best to reach out to your provider as soon as you can to determine if and how to file a claim if you are eligible to do so.

Open windows and doors if possible. If you can, aiding the drying time by opening windows or doors around the impacted area can aid the drying time, as can drying up water with towels if you are sure that it is safe to do so.
